What is
Homeopathy? Homeopathy is a
natural pharmaceutical science that uses
natural substances in very small doses to
stimulate or activate a body's own innate
healing capacity. The word 'homeopathy'
is derived from two Greek words omio
(meaning 'same') and patbos (meaning
'suffering'). The Greek physician,
Hippocrates, over 2000 years ago, taught
about a principle called the law of
similars. This principle holds that
"like cures like" - that is, a
substance that triggers a certain symptom
of illness in a healthy person can also
help alleviate that same symptom in a
sick person. Symptoms are the efforts of
the body to heal itself or to reestablish
homeostasis or balance. It is more
beneficial to aid and stimulate the
body's immune system, instead of treating
or suppressing specific symptoms. Homeopathic
medicines individually chosen for their
ability to cause in overdose the similar
symptoms that a person is experiencing
would assist the body's natural defenses,
rather than go against. Homeopathic
medicines stimulate the immune system.

In the
late 1700s, doctors commonly relied upon bloodletting, sometimes
removing up to four-fifths of a patient's
blood. To draw out an infection, blistering
was a common treatment,
where caustic or hot substances were
placed on the skin. To purge the bowels,
extremely high doses of calomel, a drug
containing mercury, was used. It cleansed
the bowels, but also caused teeth to
loosen, hair to fall out, and other
symptoms of acute mercury poisoning.
In the
1790s, Samuel Hahnemann, a German
physician, sought gentler treatments. He
revisited the law of similars and began
to develop a theory based on the law of
similars, the minimum dose, and the
single remedy.
Homeopathy
gained much of its popularity in the
United States and in Europe during the
1800s because of its success in treating
people with scarlet fever, cholera,
yellow fever, and many other infectious
diseases that were prevalent at the time.
Death rates in
conventional medical hospitals were
50-88% higher than those in homeopathic
hospitals.
Why choose
Homeopathic Medicines over Herbal or
Conventional Medicines?
Conventional
immunizations and allergy treatments
stimulate the immune system by
introducing small doses of what caused
the condition. Homeopathic medicines are
derived from plant, mineral, and animal
substances and are diluted so that only
the basic essence of the original
substance remains. This eliminates
the possibility of side effects which can be caused
by allopathic and herbal medicines.
Homeopathic
remedies are prepared using a process
call potentization, which is the
successive dilution of a small amount of
the original substance. This process
ensures that the substance has been
diluted to the point where it cannot
cause an allergic reaction, such as might
happen when using an herbal medicine.
Homeopathic theory holds that a more
dilute remedy will act longer, be more
effective, and require fewer doses.
Therefore,
homeopathic medicines have no
harmful side effects. Because of a new
understanding of drug toxicity of
orthodox drugs and the detrimental effect
on a person's health, homeopathy is
gaining more acceptance in the United
States and Canada. It is commonplace in
many parts of the world. On average, 40%
of the physicians in France, Germany, and
India use homeopathic medicines in their
practices. It is well respected in
Germany, Britain, France, Greece, and the
Netherlands and is quite popular in
Mexico, South America, South Africa,
India, and Australia.
When to use
Homeopathy?
Homeopathy
is most effective when used in the
earlier stages of an acute or chronic
illness. While some diseases respond
quickly, within a few hours, others may
take longer to respond to the remedy.
The
following is a partial list for which
homeopathic remedies have been proven effective:
ear
infections, croup, acute diarrhea,
bladder infections, teething problems,
hyperactivity, some emotional
disturbances, some behavior problems,
colds, flus, pneumonia, bladder
infections, arthritis, allergies, asthma,
uterine fibroids, colitis, diarrhea,
immune-related illnesses, autoimmune
diseases, vascular diseases, respiratory
infections, chronic viral and bacterial
infections, digestive system disorders,
hay fever, recovery after abdominal
surgery, pain or trauma, psychological
problems, duration and complications of
delivery, diabetes, pain of dental
procedures, gas poisoning, myopia,
cramps, lymphedema, respiratory
insufficiency, skin diseases, migraine
and tension headaches, fibromyalgia,
rheumatoid arthritis
Homeopathy is
Economical.
With the
rising costs of health care today, you'll
find that homeopathy offers tremendous
savings over traditional
prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
And with proper handling, homeopathic
medicines have an unlimited shelf life.
Homeopathy is Safe
and Effective.
While conventional
drugs and medical procedures, such as surgery
and radiation, have shown tremendous
benefits, it is also coming to light over
time that a long
list of side effects, sometimes
dangerous, are also associated with them.
Shouldn't you be
using a more natural, less toxic, method
of health care?
Homeopathy
is generally considered to be non-toxic
and safe due the extreme dilution of the
remedies used. While some toxic
substances, such as arsenic, cadmium, and
mercury, are the basis of certain
remedies, the dilutions are ordinarily so
extreme that they cannot reach toxic
levels in the body. Unlike
the dangerous side effects of orthodox
drugs, homeopathy has no side
effects. Homeopathic
remedies are all natural, made from
dilutions of plant, mineral, and animal
substances.
The Food
and Drug Administration classifies
homeopathic medicines as over the counter
drugs, and therefore, their manufacture
is regulated by the F.D.A. There are no
documented cases of homeopathic remedies
interacting with conventional drugs.
Two
hundred years and millions of cases have
shown that homeopathy aided in the
treatment of illnesses and ailments.
Clinical evidence, scientifically
conducted double-blind tests, and
scientific research published in medical
journals have demonstrated the
effectiveness of homeopathy. In all that
time and in all those cases, homeopathic
remedies have never proven to be toxic to
the body.
